Teacher Retention That Works: How School Districts Boost Morale, Growth, and Student Success
Teacher retention is not just about keeping educators in classrooms. It is about creating environments where they want to stay, grow, and thrive.
Over the past three years, we have partnered with districts across Indiana to make that vision a reality. Through the Get Your Teach On framework, these campuses have leaned into three critical areas:
Strong Tier I instruction that drives measurable student results
Professional development that equips teachers with strategies they can use immediately
A culture of joy and rigor that re-energizes educators and restores purpose
One of the clearest connections we have seen is between student achievement and teacher morale. When instructional practices remain stagnant, results do not improve and frustration rises. Teachers and leaders are working hard, but not always on the right things. By resetting strong, research-based practices that deliver results within any curriculum, schools are helping teachers see real growth in their students. That progress is motivating and reinforces their belief that the work matters.
Many of these districts have embraced the mindset of “Every Lesson. Every Student. Every Time.” Consistency in best practices is what drives change at scale.
Retention, however, is not only about results. It is also about identity. We have worked with teachers to reconnect with their passions beyond the classroom and to bring that joy into their teaching. By viewing instruction as both science and art, teachers are empowered to show up authentically while meeting standards with creativity and purpose.
The outcomes have been clear. Districts that once struggled with turnover are now seeing teachers remain, lead, and innovate in ways that reimagine what is possible for students.
Retention does not happen because of a contract. It happens when teachers feel supported, inspired, and able to see both results and joy in their work.
We are proud of the progress across Indiana and grateful to partner with leaders who understand that when you invest in your people, student success always follows.
